Self-care has been credited by many as the reason they were able to overcome stress, anxiety, depression, grief and so much more.

When I was taught about self-care, it totally revolutionised my emotional health. It made me the man that I am today!

So, in this blog post, I want to share 5 steps to self-care that you can use to change your life.

1# Daily Self-Love

I can’t begin to say how important it is to find a way to express self-love daily.

Love is central to self-care and living a happy, healthy life.

In fact, I would argue that love is the most important thing to have in life – and I’m sure a lot of people would agree.

But, love starts from within.

One of the amazing benefits of self-love is that the more you love yourself, the more you open yourself up to the love of others.

One very easy way to express self-love in less than 10 minutes a day is to simply write down 10 things that you love about yourself.

And these 10 things can be anything, as long as you can access a true sense of love for them.

Another simple way is taking the time to smile at yourself in the mirror for a few minutes in the morning and evening.

This is such a powerful way of reminding yourself that you are loved.

2# Treat Your Body Right

Treating Your Body Right Is Essential For Self-Care

The old saying goes, “If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.”.

And, it turns out that this is 100% true.

By making sure that you spend time eating the right foods, getting the right amount of rest and doing regular physical exercise, you are building a body that will support you for life.

Now, this isn’t to say that you’ll never get sick or get hurt.

Of course, these things will still happen.

But, it’s much easier to bounce back from illness and injury when you had a healthy body to begin with.

Now, I’m not here to tell you how to live your life and what to do with your body.

But making healthy lifestyle choices will remind your body that you care for it.

And, as I said, a healthy body creates a healthy life!

You don’t have to overhaul your diet and become a bodybuilder, but always remember that the healthier the choice you make, the more your body can support you in life.


3# Process Your Emotions

Process Your Emotions

I had a really unhealthy relationship with my emotions for a long time.

There were anger issues, anxieties, insecurities and much more that I refused to address.

And, when those compounded over time, they eventually led me to a place of deep self-loathing.

But, when I started seeing a counsellor regularly, she began to show me how to process my emotions healthily.

And, pretty soon after that, I was able to take control of my life for the first time ever.

You see, if we don’t process our emotions and instead choose to bury them, we’re not solving the problem.

Instead, we’re just letting the pressure build.

Eventually, though, that pressure will have to explode outwards and then we have to deal with an even bigger problem.

So, instead of bottling your emotions up or ignoring them, learning how to process them in a healthy way is the best way to deal with them.

This might involve having an emotional outlet such as going to the gym or practising martial arts.

Or, it might involve being a little bit more introspective through meditation or journaling.

Or maybe therapy or counselling could be the right way to go.

Whatever it is, find a way that works for you and then stick with it for as long as you can.

There is no downside to learning how to process emotions healthily.

So, give it a try and see what happens.


4# Create A Support Network

Creating A Support Network Is Essential For Self-Care

Having a group of people that love you and who you can rely on for support is awesome for self-care.

But, you might be thinking, doesn’t getting other people involved defeat the purpose of self-care?

Not at all.

Because this is all about “support” rather than “dependence”.

You see, if we depend on others to help us process our emotions and deal with life’s hardships, then we’ll never learn how to do this for ourselves.

But, when we’re on the path of self-improvement, it’s OK to ask for help.

It’s OK to take support and comfort from others.

Plus, when we are reminded that other people love and care for us, it makes it easier for us to love and care for ourselves.

5# Set Goals and Go After Them

Set Your Goals

What better way to build your self-worth than achieving your goals in life!

We all have goals, dreams and things we want to achieve in life.

And, to some, going after your goals might not seem like a source of self-care.

However, when we achieve a goal, it reinforces our ability to make a positive change in our lives.

And when we know we can make a positive change in our lives, then we can take more responsibility for our outcomes.

The simple formula is “achieving goals + personal responsibility = positive outcomes and greater self-care”.

So, don’t be afraid to go after your goals (even the big ones).

Break down your goals into small steps that you can complete either daily or at least regularly.

That way, when you take a small step towards your goals, you are building momentum.

And the more momentum you build, the faster you will achieve your goals, find your personal responsibility and create the life you desire.
