Best Books For Building Self-Esteem

Well, as I’m sure we all know, having low self-esteem sucks!

For the first 22 years of my life, I struggled with low self-esteem every single day.

But, when I started to read books on building self-esteem, I began a journey that led me to this moment.

Since then, I’ve overcome my low self-esteem, gained my inner confidence and now I coach and train others to do the same.

But, strangely enough, the books that had the most impact on my self-esteem weren’t necessarily books for building self-esteem.

So, in this blog post, I want to share 5 of the best books for building self-esteem that aren’t really about self-esteem.

1# The Compound Effect – Darren Hardy

What’s It About?

The Compound Effect is based on the principle that your everyday decisions shape your future.

Essentially, the small, forgettable decisions that we make daily, in fact, build up over time.

Now, if those decisions are positive (e.g. saving 10% of your income every month), then we’ll create a positive outcome over time (e.g. a savings nest egg or a sizeable investment fund).

But, if they’re negative (e.g. eating a chocolate bar every day), then those decisions will compound as well to create a negative life outcome (e.g. obesity, diabetes, etc.).

Our small, daily decisions are actually the most important because they compound and build momentum over time.

Just like pushing a snowball down a hill, those decisions get bigger and bigger, building up speed until we reach the final outcome, whether it’s good or bad.

Main Lesson:

Little, everyday decisions will either take you to the life that you want or lead you to disaster by default.

How Does This Link To Self-Esteem?

Let’s say that you start a daily self-love practice.

Over time, that practice will simply merge with your day as a habit that you perform without thinking.

At that point, because of the hundreds of times you’ve practised self-love, it will become part of who you are.

And, where there is self-love, low self-esteem cannot live for long.

But, it all started with the decision to start practising self-love one day and then the next day and the next.

2# Daring Greatly – Brené Brown

Daring Greatly - One of the best books for building self-esteem

What’s It About?

It’s no secret that I love Brené Brown’s books.

And this book is no exception to that.

In this book, she shows that finding the courage to be vulnerable is the key to transforming our lives.

Whilst it might be scary to allow yourself to be vulnerable, using your courage to embrace that vulnerability will make you stronger.

In a sense, allowing yourself to be vulnerable builds up the courage muscle in your mind until your mental strength is unstoppable.

Main Lesson:

Vulnerability is strength! If we allow yourselves to feel vulnerable, we reveal our true selves and we can start to experience life with purpose and meaning.

How Does This Link To Self-Esteem?

When you’re suffering from low self-esteem, you hide who you are because you think that you aren’t worthy.

However, when we challenge that assumption and embrace vulnerability, we start to fight back.

We live in alignment with our true selves, accepting our flaws and imperfections.

This is what healthy self-esteem looks like.

3# The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F**k – Mark Manson

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F Book Cover

What’s It About?

In a direct contradiction to modern positive psychology, Mark Manson shares a truth that a lot of us are a little uncomfortable admitting.

We only have a limited amount of things that we can give an F about. Yet, we find ourselves giving these Fs away to things that don’t matter every single day – e.g. low self-esteem.

Manson suggests that the best use of our time is to find something meaningful that aligns with our values. By doing that, you’ll only be giving your Fs away to things that genuinely matter.

Main Lesson:

Only give a f**k about things that align with your values – everything else is a waste of your time.

How Does This Link To Your Self-Esteem?

By not caring so much about what others think about us and giving away our time and energy to insecurities, we can focus on the things that matter.

In this case, we can focus more on the practices that will build our self-esteem over time.

4# Mastery – Robert Greene

Mastery by Robert Greene - Book Cover

What’s It About?

This book provides a clear, simple pathway to the mastery of your life.

Through historical examples and psychological insight, Robert Greene shows how some of the most successful figures in history and the modern era came to be who they were and still are.

For example, how Leondardo Da Vinci went from illegitimate son destined for nothing to becoming one of the greatest thinkers to ever live.

Main Lesson:

Many famous people started out with nothing. But, through a rigorous apprenticeship, hard work and continuous learning and development, they completely re-wrote their lives, changed the world and solidified their place in history.

How Does This Link To Self-Esteem?

Maybe you’re not looking to change the world.

Maybe you’re just looking to change your life and live with confidence.

In this case, we can still use the process of Mastery to master our self-esteem.

As long as you’re willing to put the work in and fight for what you want, then you can beat low self-esteem.

5# Love Yourself Life Your Life Depends On It – Kamil Ravikant

Love Yourself Like Your Life Depends On It

What’s It About?

After suffering a huge personal loss when his business suddenly collapsed, Kamil Ravikant fell into a deep depression.

Unable to move forward with his life, he found comfort in the expression of self-love.

Over time, he was able to pull himself out of his downward spiral and transform his life through the power of self-love.

Main Lesson:

Self-love is the key to self-improvement in all areas of life.

How Does This Link To Self-Esteem?

Where self-love exists, low self-esteem cannot.

After all, you can’t love yourself whilst at the same time believing you’re not worthy of love, happiness, success and so much more in life.

Self-love shows your mind that you have personal worth.

It trains you to see yourself as someone worthy of love, belonging, compassion and success.

So, if you’re looking for a powerful way to change your life fast, self-love is the key.
