5 of the Best Books On Overcoming Insecurity

In this article, I want to share with you five amazing books on overcoming insecurity that have really helped me to change my life.

These are books that I re-read at least once a year for as long as I’ve had them.

Ranging from modern philosophy to downright inspirational stories, I’ve selected only the best books that have impacted my life.

The most important thing though, when you read these books, is to apply the lessons that you learn.

These books changed my life, but only when I was willing to put them into practice.

So, let’s get started with…

Book 1: The Power of Vulnerability (Audiobook/Audiocourse) – Brené Brown

What’s The Book About?

This book is all about finding the courage to show up and be seen in the world.

The more we try to protect ourselves from vulnerability, the more scared and disconnected we become.

Learning to be vulnerable is the opposite.

Instead, it means living openly and allowing ourselves to engage with the world fully. It’s the courage to put ourselves out there, even thought we know we could get hurt.

But, we know that when we can do that, then we are better able to experience life to the fullest degree.

Main Lesson:

Through vulnerability, you become authentic and this allows you to feel love, belonging and joy in your life.

How Does This Link To Your Insecurities?

In order to beat our insecurities, we have to allow ourselves to be vulnerable.

Unfortunately, this isn’t work that we can do in our heads and it’s going to involve going out into the world and just trying things.

For some, it might involve being honest with a partner. For others, it’s saying how we truly feel or simply trying something new which could fail.

But, ultimately, when we approach these experiences openly, they help us to grow. As long as we are willing to learn from the lessons life gives.

Book 2: The Obstacle Is The Way – Ryan Holiday

It might take time and it might not be easy, but overcoming our obstacles in life shows that we have the power to change our lives, take a stand and do the right thing.

Main Lesson:

We have two choices:

  • We can either allow ourselves to be blocked by obstacles in life
  • Or we can choose to advance through them

The choice is yours.

Insecurities are our obstacles to happiness, success and peace.

Of course, over time we could find a way to live with our insecurities and avoid them as often as possible, but it never solves the problem.

The most effective and rewarding way of overcoming our insecurities is to go right through them.

Because when you do, you’ll know that you have the strength and grit to do anything in life.

Book 3: The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F**k – Mark Manson

What’s The Book About?

In a direct contradiction to modern positive psychology, Mark Manson shares a truth that a lot of us are a little uncomfortable admitting.

We only have a limited amount of things that we can give an F about. Yet, we find ourselves giving these Fs away to things that don’t matter every single day – e.g. insecurities.

Manson suggests that the best use of our time is to find something meaningful that aligns with our values. By doing that, you’ll only be giving your Fs away to things that genuinely matter.

Main Lesson:

Only give a f**k about things that align with your values – everything else is a waste of your time.

How Does This Link To Your Insecurities?

Our insecurities make us give up so much time to hundreds of possibilities.

As Mark Twain said, “I’ve known a great many troubles and most of them never happened.”

By only giving your time to things that align with your genuine values, you limit the amount of things that you have to worry about.

Then, you can take action on the things that matter in life.

Book 4: Can’t Hurt Me – David Goggins

Can't Hurt Me is another one of the highly recommended books on overcoming insecurity

What’s The Book About?

David Goggins has been through a lot in his life.

He had an abusive and tumultuous childhood, fought prejudice, stigma and obesity to become one of the hardest men in the world.

To list a few of his achievements:

  • Held the World Record for most pullups in 24 hours
  • Ran 100 miles on legs that were broken
  • Became a Navy seal after beating obesity
  • And so much more…

Through sheer determination, Goggins transformed himself from someone insecure and failing in life to one of the most motivational men to currently be alive.

In this book, he provides lessons to help people overcome their personal struggles to become the person they were always meant to be.

Main Lesson:

Comfort is the enemy. It keeps you scared and weak.

Only by facing yourself every single day and holding yourself accountable will you be able to push forward and be free.

How Does This Link To Your Insecurities?

Fixating on our insecurities is the most comfortable thing we could do. It requires no action and no hardship compared to facing them head on.

But, by holding ourselves accountable to be the best versions of ourselves, it forces you to take action towards what you want to be in life.

Book 5: Man’s Search For Meaning – Viktor Frankl

What’s The Book About?

During World War II, Frankl was confined within a Nazi concentration camp. He was torn away from his loved ones, most of which were then killed.

But, he made a decision which is likely the reason he stayed alive for so long.

He gave himself a purpose by which to live whilst existing in some of the harshest circumstances ever recorded in history.

Frankl transformed his imprisonment into one of the greatest studies on how humans survive in the worst of circumstances.

He would later write Man’s Search for Meaning, presenting his philosophy which has sparked many self-improvement journeys since then.

Main Lesson:

If you have a powerful enough reason “why” to do something, then you can overcome almost anything.

How Does This Link To Your Insecurities?

Granted, working through insecurities is nothing like being in a concentration camp.

But, for many people it’s the hardest thing they’ll have to do in life.

It may be the hardest thing you ever have to do too.

But, by giving yourself a powerful reason “why”, you give yourself an unlimited source of motivation to succeed.

So, find your “why”.
