Make sure you check out the video below for more amazing content!

What You Need To Know About Setting Big Goals

Here’s the honest truth.

If you follow the traditional goal setting advice (SMART goals), then they tell you that you should set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-based.

But that approach can really limit your true potential, especially the part about goals needing to be “realistic”.

In fact, I don’t always encourage a realistic approach to goal setting.

Why?

Because any goal that we set is in some way going to be unrealistic because we don't know if we can actually do it.

Really, anything could happen.

And because of that, I genuinely believe that it is more effective to set big goals in your life rather than small, “realistic” goals.

We all believe that we can achieve the goals that we set on some level.

So, if that's the case, then why not set big goals for yourself?

One HUGE Benefit of Setting Big Goals

Setting big goals is the most practical way that you can set goals as well.

For example, let’s say that you wanted to lose weight and you currently weigh 300lbs. There’s two ways that you could go.

A – You could set the goal to lose 100lbs this year.

B – You could set the goal to lose 10lbs this year.

Goal A is potentially unrealistic and Goal B is very realistic.

With Goal B, you could probably achieve it in about 3 months, but then what happens next?

On the other hand, with Goal A you absolutely have to work your ass off to move towards that goal because it’s such a huge goal.

But, the best thing about this goal is that even if you fail it and only get halfway there, you’ve still achieved a weight loss of 50lbs.

That is still a huge achievement!

In fact, it’s a 5X greater loss of weight than if you had stuck with Goal B.

With smaller, easier goals, there is always the temptation to finish them and then just stop when the journey isn’t even close to completion yet.

Whereas if you just set yourself a big goal to begin with and only get halfway there, you’ve still achieved so much!

Personally, I think it's far better to overestimate what your potential is.

Even if you don't hit that top end goal, you're still going to be achieving a higher level than you might have previously thought.

The Power of Goal Setting

Big goals are powerful motivators as well.

They motivate us to get out of our comfort zone.

Most of my long-term goals are enormous.

  • Create an 8-figure self-improvement business
  • Travel the world in luxury
  • Get 1 million subscribers on Youtube

In fact, some probably would seem impractical and unrealistic, but I'm going to work hard to achieve them anyway, knowing full well that even if I only get 50% of the way then I will have achieved something massive.

At the end of the day, you have to get yourself out of your comfort zone.

And if you're only setting goals that are comfortable for you, then you're not challenging yourself.

And you always want to be challenging yourself.

Whether that’s just a little bit or as much as you can handle, you always want to be challenging yourself at some level.

One of the most motivating aspects of goal setting is the challenge.

Most of the big goals that you've set for yourself, you've never done them before.

And that challenge is good for you.

You want those big goals to push you forward and motivate you.

So I highly encourage you to set yourself some big goals.

Maybe even some crazy goals

Set goals that nobody would ever expect that you could achieve.

But somewhere inside you, you believe that you can set yourself those kinds of goals.

Work out an action plan and then just go for it.

See what happens.

At the end of the day the worst thing that can happen is that you don't make it all the way to your goal.

But you've still learned something and achieved something in the meantime.

So, just give it a go and start right now!
